Adire (meaning 'that which is tied and dyed' in Yoruba) is a print making tradition from Abeokuta in South Western Nigeria. Adire textiles were once traditionally dyed indigo, but over the decades the designs have evolved to include multiple colorways and printmaking techniques such as wax batik, cassava resist, stenciling and seed stitching in addition to tie dying. This piece was made in Abeokuta and being hand-printed it is one of a kind. You will be receiving the exact piece in the photographs. The textile is a light brown and black striped batik design on factory woven brushed cotton (referred to as guinea brocade in Nigeria) with a very subtle geometric brocade pattern in the background; only really visible on the selvedge because of the boldness of the print. The print is two-sided. The weave of this piece is a little lighter and drapier than African wax print textiles and is suitable to be used for clothing or pillows. The textile is 49" (1.2m) wide x 14.5' (4.4m) long. The last photo shows how adire textile are traditionally worn, not the piece listed for sale. Adire textiles are traditionally heavily starched and beaten with sticks to acquire a stiff, paper-like consistency. This piece has had the starch removed so it drapes like a conventional textile. Please see my store for other adire styles. I recommend washing separately in cold water with mild soap and fabric softener if desired. This piece has already been washed and can be used immediately. Combined shipping available on all textiles. Please ask any questions prior to purchase. Thank you! All items are 100% authentic and vintage items will have been previously worn, often in a traditional environment. Every effort has been made to describe any flaws in both words and pictures in the listings however a certain amount of wear should always be expected. Handmade items should also be expected to contain irregularities which I believe adds to their character and does not detract in any way from their quality.
